An Insider's to Local Food

LIVING IN HONG KONG FOR ALMOST 2 YEARS, HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITES PLACES TO ENJOY DELICIOUS LOCAL FOOD.

金華冰廳 Kam Wah Cafe

G/F, 47 Bute Street, Prince Edward – 4-min walk from Exit B2, Prince Edward MTR Station

It’s recognized as one of the best places that serve the famous “Pinapple Bun”, many good reviews and recommended for travelers. My auntie brought me here one time and I fell in love with their local pastries. A great place to get the “basics” of Hong Kong’s comfort food – egg tarts, pinapple buns, stir fried noodles, Singapore rice noodles, pork chop dishes. So good!

Street Food

Dundas Street and Sai Yeung Choi Street South (Mong Kok Area)

Fried pig intestines, octopus, siu mai, curry fish balls, beef balls – so many to choose from! If you are willing to try street food, go all out. Try and keep trying! My personal favorite is the fried pig intestines. Since I can’t make it at home, it tastes so good when I buy it at the local street food vendors.

Rice Boxes

This is the ultimate comfort food for me. Char siu (Chinese BBQ Pork), Roasted Pork, Chicken, Duck, with white rice, sometimes veggies and a bit of green onion & ginger sauce. Prices are usually around $15-20 HKD each. When you order, the meats get chopped right away. The best part is when they pour sauce over the meat and rice. SO GOOD LA!

B仔涼粉 (Kei Kee Dessert)

Kau Yuk Road, Yuen Long | 元朗教育路大坑渠側

Spicy chicken tips, siu mai and fish balls for dessert? Yep! This is a yummy place to get a midnight snack (宵夜 “siu je”). Honestly, the later it is, the better it taste. People literally come here to eat “dessert” around 11pm or later. My favorite dessert is the black sesame soup. Other desserts are served with fruits like mango, melon, dragon fruit, watermelon.

Honestly, it’s an adventure to go around Hong Kong and try different flavors – sweet, spicy, salty, savorily. There is still a lot I haven’t tried before. These are personally my favorite places so far :)
